The municipality and city of Maia - the sixth most important city - belong to the Porto Metropolitan Area.
Location
Located 9 km (approximately a 15-minute drive) north of the city of Porto, the municipality of Maia is bordered northwards through the municipalities of Trofa and Santo Tirso, ao leste com Valongo, to the southeast with Gondomar, to the south with the Porto, to the southwest by Matosinhos and to the northwest with Vila do Conde.Area and Population
With an area of 83 km², Maia currently has a population of 134,977 inhabitants (INE, 2021), which places the municipality and the city in sixth place in the Porto Metropolitan Area in terms of population.The municipality reached its peak population in 2011, when it had 135,306 inhabitants.
History and Rich Heritage
The municipality of Maia was the scene of many important events related to the history of Portugal. Its historical heritage is also of great importance. The modern Torre do Lidador, in the city center, is the tallest building in Portal, outside of Lisbon.
