The municipality and city of Penafiel, in Tâmega e Sousa, are located in the district of Porto, in the former Douro Litoral, a region North of Portugal.The municipality is divided into 28 parishes (districts or administrative regions, in Brazil).
Decrease in resident population
The municipality of Penafiel, with a population of 69,630 inhabitants (INE, 2021), has an area of approximately 212 km². Ten years ago, according to 2011 data, Penafiel had a population of 72,265 inhabitants. The resident population fell by 3.6% during this period.
Second Largest Producer of Vinho Verde
Penafiel is the second largest producer of Vinho Verde (DOC) in Portugal, with 11,077,922 liters produced in the 2020-2021 Campaign (CIPVV, 2021), which corresponds to 13.53% of the total Vinho Verde produced in the country. This fact allows us to say that Penafiel is the Land of Vinho Verde.Furthermore, it is the leading producer of Minho Regional Wine in Portugal, with 322,374 liters, according to data from the 2020-2021 Campaign (CIPVV, 2021).
Location
Halfway between the city of Porto and Amarante, Penafiel borders to the north, with Lousada, to the northeast with Amarante, to the east with Marco de Canaveses, to the south with Castelo de Paiva and to the west with Gondomar and Paredes.
