Lisbon's All Parishes

The parish of Alvalade, a residential and university district, is located to the north from the Historic Center of the city of Lisbon.
The parish of Alvalade was created by regrouping the parishes of São João de Brito, Campo Grande and Alvalade.

Alvalade

Increase in the resident population
With 5.34 km², the parish of Alvalade it has a population of 33,313 inhabitants (INE, 2021). In 2011, the parish of Alvalade had a population of 31,813 inhabitants (idem), having registered a small drop of % in its population resident during this period.


Location

The parish of Alvalade is located to the north of Historical Center of Lisbon.

To the north, it borders Parish of Lumiar and the parish of Olivais; to the east with parish of Marvila, to the southeast, com Areeiro and to the southwest with Avenidas Novas.

Four Subway Stations

The parish is well served by public transport; in addition to buses (buses), there are four stations on the Lisbon Metro serving the neighborhood: Alvalade, Entre Campos, Roma and Roma-Areeiro.

The Entrecampos Railway Station can also be used by the inhabitants of Alvalade.


Campo Grande Garden

The highlight for the parish of Alvalade is the Garden (Park) of Campo Grande and the University of Lisbon.

Alvalade, a well-urbanized, quiet and safe neighborhood, well served by transport, is considered one of the best neighborhoods in Lisbon.


About Alvalade

Planned, residential and quiet neighborhood, with facilities (the Alvalade Market), metro stations (Alvalade, Entre Campos, Roma and Roma-Areeiro) and services (good restaurants).
Another interesting fact is that it is close to the Historical Center of the capital.
Grand avenues pass by Alvalade, such as Avenida do Brasil (crosses Alvalade), Avenida de Roma, Avenida Almirante Gago Coutinho (north-south) and Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa (east-west).

A bit of history

Battle of Alvalade (1321)
It was in the current Freguesia de Alvalade that the troops of King D. Dinis, in 1321, fought against the troops of his son, the future king D. Afonso IV, an event that became known as the Battle of Alvalade.


University Center

University of Lisbon
In the Parish of Alvalade, in addition to the University City of the University of Lisbon (public), the largest university in Portugal, is also home to ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, and the universities Portuguese Catholic University, the Lusophone University of Humanities and Technologies, among others university service buildings. Also noteworthy is the University Stadium of Lisbon.

Located in Alvalade is the campus of ULisboa, the famous and largest university in Portugal and one of the best in Europe.
The faculties are spread across Campo Grande and are accessible by the Lisbon Metro, in addition to buses (buses) of the company Carris.

Tourist attractions in Alvalade

A balanced neighborhood in terms of housing and services.
May 1st Park. A unique space reserved for various (d)sport practices, in the heart of Lisbon.
Traditional stores, grocery stores and other old-fashioned businesses are highlights of Alvalade. The Alvalade Market, an unmissable visit and shopping, is considered the best in the Portuguese capital.

Alvalade Market

The Mercado de Alvalade Norte is one of the best places in Lisbon to buy vegetables and other fresh products (fruits, etc.). It opened in the early 1960s. In addition to selling a wide range of fresh products, there are restaurants where you can eat excellent fresh fish in Lisbon.

"On July 31, 1964, after the official inauguration, the population of Alvalade would be served by a market covered, the Mercado de Alvalade Norte, on Avenida Rio de Janeiro. A "model market" (project by the architect Costa Belém) with around 3000 m², 219 sales outlets (vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, eggs and flowers), refrigerated counters and canteen, and which still persists today as a reference of quality in the food trade" [Hemeroteca de Lisboa].

What to do in Alvalade

There are several walks (such as in Jardim do Campo Grande) and visits to do in Alvalade, in addition to its well-known parks.
One of the options is Morgado dos Lagares (or Solar da Quinta dos Lagares d'El-Rei).

There are nice cafes and restaurants where we can chat, refresh ourselves with our favorite drink and taste the delights of Lisbon and Portuguese cuisine.
